About Sherman County
Sherman County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The county is named for William Tecumseh Sherman, a Union general in the American Civil War. In 2000, its population was 1,934. The seat of the county is Moro. The largest city is Wasco.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 831 square miles, of which 823 square miles is land and 8 square miles is water.
High and dry on the Columbia Plateau, Sherman County’s most important crop is winter wheat. Of the county's 531,200 acres, 304,138 are tillable. Farms average 3,500 acres and the average yield is 42 bushels per acre. Wind farms in the northeast section of Sherman County serve as an additional economic driver. Living on the cusp between the hot desert lands to the east and the cool moist intermountain valley and ocean to the west creates ample winds for power generation.
