About Douglas County

Douglas County is a county located in the state of Oregon. In 2010, its population was 107,667. It is named after Stephen A. Douglas, an American politician who supported Oregon statehood. The seat of the county is Roseburg. The heavily timbered county contains nearly 1.8 million acres of commercial forest lands and one of the oldest stands of old growth timber in the world. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,134 square miles, of which 5,037 square miles is land and 97 square miles is water. A portion of the Umpqua National Forest is in Douglas County.

Among the major industries in Douglas County, lumber and wood products are the largest in manufacturing. As of 1997, Douglas County had 2.8 million acres in commercial forest lands. The county produced 12 percent of the total timber harvest for Oregon in 2001.

The Wine industry has emerged as an economic force in the Southern Oregon Umpqua Valley region. The area has 60 vineyards, 12 wineries, and 1,100 vineyard acres. The Umpqua Valley's winegrowing history dates back to the 1880s when German immigrants who had worked for the Beringer Bros., the oldest continuously operating vineyard in Napa, planted the first wine grape vineyard in the Valley. In 1969, Paul Bjelland of Bjelland Vineyards founded the Oregon Winegrowers Association in the Umpqua Valley. The Umpqua Valley appellation continues to evolve as new winemakers discover the area, bringing with them a passion for innovation and world-class wine.
